Gluten Free

A gluten-free diet can have a variety of health benefits, such as improving cholesterol levels, promoting digestive health, and increasing energy levels. With the rise in the number of individuals choosing to go “Gluten Free’ for health purposes, an increasing opportunity within the food sector is becoming evident.

Mintel research shows that 12% of new food products launched in the UK in 2015 carried a gluten-free claim, up from 7% in 2011.

The benefits of a gluten free diet have recently been pushed into the media by Novak Djokovic who changed his diet following a consultation with Dr Igor Cetojevic. The Doctor saw one of Djokovic's mid-match collapses and knew exactly what was wrong. Cetojevic changed Djokovic's diet, and subsequently the tennis world number 1's life. Djokovic now boasts increased energy levels, less anxiety and improved digestion. We have two white papers which let you know a lot more.

The first, Gluten Free Products explains about the rise in the gluten free trend, and the second focuses on a very special new product, Gluten Free Rusk.

Superfood

Superfood

Though there is no legal or medical definition, Superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals. Many food brands are funding academic research to understand the health benefits from certain “Superfoods”.

The superfood trend exploits the fact that healthier lifestyle choices, including diet, can reduce our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Low Salt

Around 10% of salt in or diet occurs naturally in food, with up to 75% of salt in western diets coming from food processing. The national average salt intake is around 9.5g/day compared to the recommended amount of 3.5g/day!

Though Sodium is vital to our health, too much can be heavily detrimental. Dry seasonings are inherently salty, our team of Development Specialists have perfected ways to reduce this salt level giving you the green light on food packaging traffic light system.

Low Fat

Low Fat

It is important to recognise the different dietary fats; the fats we're trying to reduce are Saturated Fats.

Eating a diet with a high proportion of saturated fats can raise the level of cholesterol in the blood, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease significantly.

UK health guidelines recommend that the average man should eat no more than 30g of saturated fat and the average woman should eat no more than 20g a day.

On average two grilled sausages contain 8g of saturated fat!
Foodmaker have explored different techniques to reduce the fat content in products, such as sausage, by using different ingredients in the seasoning.

Healthy Raw Materials

There is currently a trend in the market that consumers are no longer trying to take out ingredients from their food, but actually add ingredients in...for health purposes of course. Many of the raw materials we use are said to offer health benefits to the consumer; garlic, ginger, chilli etc and many food manufacturers are capitalising on this trend.

One such ingredient is Turmeric (Curcuma longa), the bright yellow of the spice rainbow, is a powerful medicine that has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions, including flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, hemorrhage, toothache, bruises, chest pain, and colic.

See our raw material matrix here that shows the health benefits of some of our most popular ingredients.

SeaWeed

Edible Sea Weed

Seaweed sales have soared by 147% in Europe between 2011 and 2015. Jamie Oliver is hailing it a superfood in his latest cookbook. A staple in our diet in ancient times, seaweed has become popular not just because of its delicious flavour, but because of its many health benefits; It’s super-rich in iodine, a nutrient not found in many other foods, while some varieties are also high in protein and vitamins A-C.

Foodmaker have trialled seaweed as an additional flavour, with the creation of smoked seaweed, also as a functional ingredient to reduce salt.

Increased Protein

Proteins are the primary building blocks of the body. This macro is made up of amino acids, of which our body can make 12 (Essential Amino Acids) but needs to get 9 from the proteins in the food we eat (Non-Essential Amino Acids).

The benefits of a high protein diet have come to the forefront in the past twelve months. High protein drinks are not longer solely for the gym goer, many consumers are adding additional protein in their diet for benefits that can include weight loss, appetite control and healthier hair and nails.

Foodmaker have developed several “added protein” seasonings that capitalise on this trend, talk to us to find out more about these products, the levels that protein needs to be added into a product to declare and the other benefits to your customers.

As part of Foodmaker's innovation, we're constantly looking for new products to resolve issues in the food market. We have found a replacement for Carmine.

Carmine is a well known additive that many producers are trying to remove from their products. First discovered by The Aztecs and used to dye their fabrics, the colour has been used in food for many years. Though this product has come under scrutiny due to it's health risks and it's origin, being a Cochineal extract which is extracted specifically from the female Cochineal bug.

Introducing Foodmaker's NatuRed, our natural colour made from perennial herbs. We have prepared a white paper on this fantastic new product Natured.
